My statement for the event:
Rosella alternates working on commissions with creating art where words and language are the catalyst for self-expression. In choosing a particular word, a poem or prose she communicate her passion for language and celebrates their meaning by using materials, colour and form that best expresses their essence or mood. In "Serendipity", for example, the shape of this powerful WORD is the structure of the painting and divides the space as well as supporting the smaller lines of text that amplifies its meaning. The huge contrast of lettering scale creates drama and the warm palette hints at the atmosphere created by the light coming trough stained glass windows. The word SERENDIPITY was coined by Horace Walpole in the 18th century, the originator of the gothic novel genre, he used the word to describe a situation where somebody makes happy discoveries, by accident but with wisdom, of things which somebody is not in search of...The creative process is often full of serendipitous events and this word describe a phenomenon of life itself that is worth celebrating.
